The RAIDERS
After six hours of surgery, Hilda was crashing.
(Day? Night? I donât care what it is. Itâs dark, and I have to sleep.)
But she had a few things to do first.
Hilda examined Jon as he rested on his field cot. She checked his vital signs and adjusted his IV. The rosy color had returned to his face, a clear sign that he was back among the land of the living. For the first time since Hilda arrived on Walkenwood, relief washed over her.
(Jonâs going to be okay. I canât believe the things this man can do with his feet.)
She turned toward her med bot slumped on the ground.
(But Poly? I donât think the poor girlâs going to make it.)
Poly had given Jon everything she had. Her medical expertise. Her full attention. Her determination. Her entire left hand from the wrist down and almost all her blood. Poly made it through the entire surgery before she began to malfunction, but then, she overheated. Rebooting didnât help. A med bot needs 20 percent of her total blood capacity for cooling her own internal systems. Hilda confirmed Polyâs levels for the third timeâ 7%. Maybe a quarter liter of blood left. Not enough to even maintain sleep mode. Poly ran dangerously hot. Hilda crouched down face to face with the droid that sacrificed everything to save a patient. Yes, Poly was programmed to do that, but stillâit hit Hilda hard. Polyâs blue LED eyes were so dim that they barely lit at all anymore.
âI know you canât hear me right now. But I just want to thank you, Poly⦠Thank you for everything.â Grief overwhelmed Hilda as she pressed the power button behind Polyâs right ear. The hot titanium shell burned her, urging tears. Hilda sucked her scalded finger and cried as she watch Poly die.
Soon after, Hilda slept.
Lucid dreams commingled with memories of Poly and bizarre snippets of telepathic sex chat. Hildaâs exhausted brain skipped around. A plastic treasure chest with the bubbler lid flapping. Purchasing a med bot five years ago. A song she didnât know. Naming her android. Dwarf erections. Working at the Yermo sleep lab with Poly. A mermaid with gigantic blue nipples. Somehow, she processed the chatter, sorted out her memories, and dealt with her feelings.
Then something about fish sex. Hildaâs brain couldnât handle that one. Her sleepy mind chased that concept in circles for the longest time. Like something just beyond her grasp, fish sex evaded her. Drifting. Dreamingâ¦
Red. Suddenly, she saw red.
Not the flames of a fire, but the red-hot color of burning desire.
(The intensity is absolutely gorgeous.)
She concentrated, this dream was close. Real close. Not hers. But in the same camp with her. Was it Jon? Could it be?
(Focus, Hilda. Tune in. Watch the Sleeper.)
As clear as dayâno, clearer and brighter than day, she saw the majorâs steamy dream in supersaturated colorâ¦
